Pace is a series that evolved when I was using the subway in New York. Moving around at a visitor’s pace, I suddenly noticed the pace of movement: of people pouring in and out of buildings, trains and streets, being driven by a certain need and urgency. What started as an interesting observation, soon became the subject matter for my paintings. It was the swiftness and rhythm of movement, or the lack of any, of the people in different places that I visited, I tried to capture- from the pace of travellers in a crowded Railway station in India to the Changing of the guard, or the pace of life on a Saturday night!
As the series progressed, I became more drawn to the spirit and the energy behind their physical movement, as in 'Unfazed I and II'.
